When I was 18 years old (that’s TEN years ago btw!), I wrote down a “dream list” of things i’d like to achieve with music. At the time much of it seemed to be near impossible, but a decade on and i’ve pretty much reached every target I set. The higlights:
1. Have my music featured on vinyl and cd formats
Consider that one signed off with a 7”,12” and CD under the “Rise” moniker, and a CD album as Mecca:83….not counting production credits & remixes :-)
2. Produce tracks on commercially released projects for both Hip Hop & Soul Artists
See Replife’s “The Unclosed Mind” album and Deborah Jordan’s “The Light”. Plus remixes for Jazz Chronicles, Electric Conversation etc etc etc.
3. Have my music played on Giles Peterson’s Worldwide Show.
Giles played a few track from the Rise album in 2011, as well as some tunes i produced for Replife and Deborah Jordan throughout the years.
4. Play a paid gig and (if possible) play abroad.
Headlined In The Loop (alongside Mr Danny Drive Thru), played a bunch of gigs this year and even made it out to Rotterdam, Netherlands to do a music workshop and play out live.
Ok, ego stroking done for a minute! My point really is that I’ve achieved everything I set out to do with this music thing and more……So where do I take it from here?
I’m thankful for every opportunity that’s come my way in the past few years and it’s been a privilege to meet, share stages with and even work with some of my heros (there’s a Jneiro Jarel verse on my hard drive that you’ve yet to hear!!!).
The thing is, I have no real desire to “take this to the next level” or whatever you want to call it. I’m happy where I am. I enjoy being able to interact directly with the people who listen to my tunes…..and I actually really like having the power to release my material for free if i feel like it!
So if you’re a “fan” (i prefer to think of you as peers who think i make decent beats), i’m interested to know: do you want me to only put out 1 project a year on vinyl/cd……or would you rather I kept dropping releases via bandcamp/itunes/amazon throughout the year?
Personally i’m feeling the idea of just dropping singles and short EPs continually throughout the year - I feel I work better on short projects than full lengths. But at the end of the day, this is about what the listeners want…..what YOU want. So tell me!
with respect
Evan aka Mecca:83
